Catheters may sometimes need to be
placed into large veins through the skin. The
catheter differs from the port in that its end
is left outside the skin; the tube enters the
body through a small puncture. Catheters
usually have up to three inner lines so that
different solutions—medication or
nourishment, for example—can be given.
